Earth Hour
Since the Group’s genesis where an old disused tin mine was remediated into a veritable haven in Bang Tao Bay, Banyan Tree has been committed to sustainable tourism development. Our hotels’ efforts span the spectrum from passive to active support, in hopes of inspiring guests to become fully engaged in sustainability.
The Group endeavours to raise awareness of important global issues relating to the environment, particularly the effects of Climate Change, via our support of Global Events and Celebrations, including participation in Earth Hour.
Founded in 2007 as a grassroots movement, the annual Earth Hour movement takes place from 8:30pm to 9:30pm on the last Saturday of March. In 2022, more than 190 countries supported the initiative as a symbolic catalyst for environmental change. For one hour a year, our properties turn off non-essential electric lights as a gesture of commitment to our planet.
This annual global event serves to promote awareness of climate change. In 2022, 40 of our properties saved 7,473 kWh of electricity in a single hour. From 2020 to 2022, individual engagement has increased by 285% with 16,035 participants, and our Group has saved 17,806 kWh.
